It’s also used by your operating system, which acts as the “Swiss Army Knife” of your computer. RAM stores data as an array of microscopic switches called transistors. Each transistor is either on or off, and the memory uses the electrons that flow between those two positions to store and retrieve data. RAM is the most common type of computer memory, but it has a serious limitation: It can only hold data for a short time before it needs to be refreshed with new information. How Much Computer Memory Do You Need?
Computer memory capacity is measured in gigabytes (GB), and it’s usually listed as a minimum requirement on a computer’s features list. However, since RAM capacity is measured in gigabytes, that’s usually the amount of RAM you need to meet your computer’s minimum requirements. More RAM can always help you get more done, but it will never help you if you don’t have enough RAM to store the data required to perform the tasks. What is the minimum amount of RAM you need? The answer depends on your computer’s other components, such as the CPU, motherboard, and storage. As a general rule of thumb, you need at least 2GB of RAM for every modern computer, but 8GB or more is recommended for most tasks.
Types of RAM
DIMM and SDD DIMM DIMMs are a type of computer memory that’s built into your computer’s motherboard. They’re organized as a set of small, individual memory modules that work together as a bank, with one module holding the data required by your computer and others used by the motherboard. SDD DIMM is similar to regular DIMMs, but it’s specially designed with data transfer speeds of around 1,600Mbps (MegaBytes per second). For that reason, SDD DIMMs are also known as high-bandwidth memory (HBM). DDR4-SDRAM and DDR5-SDRAM Standard DRAM (dynamic random access memory) is the most common type of RAM used in computers today. It has a transfer rate of about 1,400Mbps and a capacity of 1GB. Newer versions of DRAM are DDR4-SDRAM and DDR5-SDRAM. DDR4-SDRAM has a transfer rate of about 2,000Mbps, and DDR5-SDRAM has a transfer rate of about 3,000Mbps. These new types of RAM are fast, but they’re more expensive than standard DRAM and can’t be used in older computers. So, you should upgrade your computer’s memory if you can afford it.
GDDR5 and GDDR6 video memory
Graphics cards that are built with high-bandwidth GDDR5 or GDDR6 memory can run more data-intensive programs at once without causing the computer to slow down. That’s because they have a higher RAM capacity and transfer rate compared to older-style GDDR memory. In addition, when you need to refresh the data stored in the computer’s memory, the graphics card uses the faster GDDR RAM, and the computer uses the slower DDR RAM. Graphics cards with GDDR RAM are costly, but they’re worth the money because they can greatly increase the performance of your computer.
CPU vs. Graphics card and Why They Need Their Own Memory Banks?
Many gamers believe that high-performance GPUs (graphic processing unit) need more RAM and faster RAM than the computer has, while they’re wrong. That’s because the amount of RAM required by the CPU is much more than that required by the GPU. However, high-end GPU manufacturers, like NVIDIA and AMD, have designed their cards to use their own RAM. This means that the video card uses the RAM built into the GPU, or it uses its own separate RAM. That’s why these GPU models usually have a higher-bandwidth (faster) type of memory, like GDDR RAM.
Future developments in computer memory systems
Computer memory has been around for decades, but it’s only recently that we’ve started to see major developments in computer memory systems. New types of memory, like the memory used by the new generation of graphics cards and the recently announced RAM drives, are pushing the technology to the limit. High-bandwidth RAM, for example, is only possible because of the recent advancements in computer memory systems.
